Jan Groenhart

The particular landscape of the lowlands has already fascinated Jan Groenhart (born in 1952) on young age and defied to paint. Attracted to the unknown painters’ world, he decided to follow the Rietveld Academy. There he learned to express himself in color and to be free in form and style.

The developments are well seen in the oeuvre of Jan Groenhart. He painted landscapes and still life which are inspired by the work of artists he admired a.o. Paul Cezanne (1839-1906) and Kees Verwey (1900-1995). He experimented with material and style from water color to oil painting; exuberant or just modest.

Finally he discovered that painting in water colors offered him most of the possibilities to reflect space and light. The studio of Jan Groenhart is located on the 3rd floor of an old warehouse along the canal side. There he is continuing his search for simplicity in form and color.
